About the Project
In 2021, Tulsa observed the centennial anniversary of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The tragic events of May 31-June 1, 1921 destroyed the historic African American business district known as Black Wall Street and the surrounding community that once stretched outward from Greenwood Avenue leaving thousands homeless, hundreds injured, and an unknown number killed.

In 2016 , the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission was formed. Their mission is to “leverage the rich history surrounding the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre by facilitating actions, activities, and events that commemorate and educate all citizens.” That initiative drives this project as an educational hub to tell Greenwood’s story of Tragedy to Triumph. Greenwood Rising will provide a platform for important discussions about the community and the world.

The building, positioned at a historic entrance to Black Wall Street, is an 11,000-square-foot, $7.5m history center that will honor the legacy of Black Wall Street before and after the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The project is envisioned as a cultural destination capturing the story of the Greenwood District and paving a road toward reconciliation.
